The Pods

A while back I did a review of one of my favorite kitchen gadgets, the Fusionsbrands poach pods.  So I thought I would show them in action.

After my hodgepodge Friday cardio complete with elliptical, treadmill, and bike, I decided on poached eggs on Ezekial bread for breakfast.  The poach pods reported for duty and made quick work of cookin up the eggs.

favorite gadget in my favorite color 🙂

I just spray the pods with some cooking spray, crack the eggs, and drop them in the pods.  Then I boil a couple of inches of water in a pot and place the pods to float on the water.  Pop a lid on the pot and boil for 5 or 6 minutes.

Into the hot tub

For those of you that like dippy eggs, 5 or 6 minutes poached makes a really yummy runny yolk.  I toasted a slice of Ezekial, spread on some fat-free cream cheese, and placed the eggs on top.  The slide right out of the pods and I usually put them on a paper towel first to soak up any of the water that may have boiled over the pod edges.

Sunny breakfast

There is bread under there somewhere! 🙂  I love how the farm fresh eggs I bought at the farmer’s market are so much more colorful than store-bought eggs.  The yolk is more orange than yellow and they really do taste so much better.  Accompanied by a perfect cup of coffee and breakfast was a success!

Toys

A new law passed on Tuesday in California’s Silicon Valley bans toys in unhealthy kids meals.  They are setting basic nutritional standards and will only allow toys in those meals that meet these standards.  To me this seems fair.  It’s not saying you can’t use the toy gimmick.  It’s just saying you have to use it to entice kids to eat foods that are good for them (relatively) and not contributed to their demise.

I’m not a fast food proponent.  I think it is easy to make a nutritious meal very quickly so don’t see fast food being the only “fast’ option.  I don’t intend on it being a mainstay or even common for me to feed to my own future children and RARELY ate it when I was a kid.  I do know that sometimes you have to eat on the go, though, so we need to make it as healthy as possible to do so.

I hate commercials for sugary cereals that use cartoon characters to appeal to children or tout their healthy whole grains (which is really a whole other can of worms) and I think toys in happy meal are in the same boat.

Joe Camel has disappeared for the reason that he appealed to children and obviously smoking is not a good thing to draw them to.

How is calorie-ridden, nutritionally void, fast food and the little plastic car that turns into a dinosaur or secret decoder ring in the bag any different?  It’s not in my book.

A recent CDC (Centers for Disease Control) shows that obesity is close to surpassing tobacco use as the leading cause of preventable death.  In 2000 smoking was the leading cause of 435,000 deaths while obesity (bad diet and lack of exercise) led to 400,000 deaths.  64% of the American  population is overweight or obese and by 2020, 20% of healthcare spending will be on obesity related diseases and conditions.

Do I seem passionate about this?!  I don’t hate fast food, but I do think it could be healthIER and should be a rare treat ( I do love me some MickeyD’s fries once in a blue moon) not a common meal especially for children.

California was also the first state to ban soda in public schools.  Props to  California!  Save our kids!  Texas, whatchya doin?

What do you think about it all?/Toys in fast food meals?/Cartoon characters for unhealthy kids foods?

Check out An Apple a Day for a Gourmet Granola give-away.  I’m a poet and I didn’t know it!  🙂  And apparently rather lame with that terrible joke 🙂  Anyway, these granola bars are sweetened with agave and honey and have yummy recognizable ingredients.  Put that in your happy meal!

Technical Problems

I have officially worn out my camera.  I can still take pictures, but when I click it over to view, it goes to video camera function instead of view.  Can’t see the pics I took and also can’t load them on the computer.  It has to be in view mode to do so.  CRAP!  Blogging has been the downfall of my camera and the loss of my camera is the downfall of me.  I NEED!  It’s funny how it only saw daylight on vacations before the blog and now it’s like a part of me.

I took pictures of our first veggies that have shown their green little faces this week.  We have a tiny green pepper (which should eventually turn into a yellow bell) and two little green tomatoes (to turn red at a later date).  I guess you have to take my word for it, but I’m confident you would find them as cute as I do.  Yes, they are plants but aren’t baby anything’s cute?

I received Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred in the mail yesterday and just had to give it a try.  I ordered in the other day and actually kinda forgot about it.  Jillian at your service and ready to kick some ass!  Yay!

The Shred

I admit I was thinking it would be geared more toward the Biggest Loser type needs of weight loss for people who may not be experienced exercisers.  I was pleasantly surprised that at Level 1, I got my sweat on and this morning the legs were tellin me all about it.  Hello there quads!  Nice to see you again.  I don’t find myself sore that often.  It’s kinda nice.  Glutton for punishment?  Proudly 🙂

Can’t wait to try level 2 and 3.  I loved how short it was (only 20 min) and think it will be a great addition to my cardio and yoga for some weight work.  I may do level 2 today.

Happy Hump Day!

Breakfast Broil

A little cool front came in last night and I woke up to a perfect morning for running.  I went out with the intention of just running my normal 1/2 mile to the gym and then doing some treadmill work, but once I got outside I couldn’t go in.

It is also getting lighter a bit earlier, so I don’t have to run in the dark the whole time.  At 6:15 I could already see the light coming over the trees and it wasn’t too long before the sun showed it’s shining face.  I got in 8.5 miles and it felt GREAT!  I have to say a perfect start to any day is getting in a nice run while watching the sun rise.

I came home and immediately made coffee and showered.  I decided to try a new idea that I found in Parade magazine in the paper (which we don’t get, but I pilfered from my folks when I was home a while back) for breakfast.

Bobby Flay had a section where he gave some suggestions about Easter brunch ideas.  One was a Spanish Tortilla that I made almost immediately upon returning to Austin and it was a slight fail.  Not bad, but not worth making again.  I was skeptical after that of his other recipes in Parade, but decided to give the broiled grapefruit a try.  I didn’t have the blackberry liquor, so I left that out.

Broil Baby!

It’s really simple.  Preheat the broiler on your oven.  Cut a grapefruit in half and cut around and down each section.  Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon turbinado sugar (sugar in the raw) and then broil for 3-5 minutes until sugar is caramelized.  Mix blackberries (I used blue) with 1t sugar and place on top of the grapefruit.  Bobby has redeemed himself 🙂

I’m sitting with my coffee, enjoying my grapefruit, and packing in the protein with some chocolate protein pancakes.  Perfection!

My Corner of the World

Do you have a favorite spot?  We have a big comfy chair upstairs in ourloft where I tend to spend most of my lazy time at home.  My husband is always on the couch and I’m always in the chair.  It’s not mine, but we always default to the same places.  My parents always sit in the same chairs at home.  Dad’s chair and Mom’s chair have always been known (that’s sounds a bit Goldilocks) and they don’t usually sit anywhere else.  Same thing at the dinner table.  We always sit in the exact same spot even though there are 4 other chairs.

Little Green Computer and it’s mate Little Green Mouse hang out on the ottomon of that upstairs chair instead of any desk as do any magazines I may be in the process of reading.

What's my favorite color? 🙂

I sit a desk in the office for work, but when computing for personal purposes, I’m upstairs in the chair.

Yesterday I discovered a new spot.

This one’s just right

With the wonderful weather yesterday I decided I wanted to be where I could open the windows and the chair was the perfect spot with two big windows on either side.

The View

It’s my new place 🙂  I spent this afternoon there on several conference calls and then the early evening while browsing the blogworld.

Do you have a spot or do you move around?/Do you always sleep in the same room and sit in the same chair?

Happy Anniversary!

Today (well, tonight to be exact), my husband and I have been married for 2 years!

The Perfect Day!

It started much like a normal Monday.  Up early, jog to the gym, 15min elliptical, 4 mile run, 10min bike, run home, shower, fix cup of coffee, and then….RUN FULL SPEED UP THE STAIRS, JUMP IN THE AIR AND LAND ON GROGGY HUSBAND SITTING ON COUCH.

I’m very excited and happy and feel incredibly lucky and blessed to have my wonderful husband as my partner for life.  This is just the beginning and has been a wonderful start to a lifelong marriage.

The first dance

We had a great celebratory weekend this past weekend with the family and lots o vino, but our real celebration is this coming Friday.  Our first dance was to Van Morrison’s Crazy Love who just happens to be on tour and coming to Austin THIS weekend!  How did he know it was our anniversary?  🙂

Happy Monday and Happy Anniversary to my WONDERFUL husband!
